Am I Ready For Therapy?
“I feel so alone…will anyone understand me? I feel lousy, but I am so embarrassed to talk about my struggles. No one else seems to get this stuck! I am so frustrated with myself that I repeatedly get stuck in the same places.”
Most of us consider entering therapy for years, but we wait until the discomfort of our symptoms (usually painful and overwhelming feelings) becomes greater than the hesitations about placing the call. I understand this; we are physiologically wired to avoid pain, and emotional pain is no different.
When we get stuck in life, we feel embarrassed and demoralized. From this vantage point, others look so much more adept at negotiating life easily and successfully. This type of thought pattern, which I call “comparing what you feel on the inside to how everyone else appears on the outside,” can paralyze us from seeking help through a sense of inadequacy.
Yet as an experienced therapist who has worked with over 1,000 clients, I can attest that there are striking similarities to where all of us get stuck.
There is no pressure. If you are not yet ready, please know I am here to answer any questions you might have or to speak with you when you do make the decision to start.
